There are a range of filter sizes for all types of engines ranging from small plant to large marine engines. Micfil also have a range of tank/bunker/reservoir fuel and oil polishing systems from low flow such as standby tanks to bulk systems within oil refineries.
Benefits of Ultra Fine Filtration – Fuel.
Ultra fine filtration at 0.5μm is almost a 10x improvement in the quality of filtration for fuel. Most cellulose fuel filters are rated at 2μm on installation but this quickly declines through the life of the filter. The ingress of condensation is the key cause and the element swells and blocks causing the fuel to force its way by opening wider passages. Micfil Filter elements will absorb water up to one third of the volume of the insert without any loss of performance. When combined with a water separator, no water reaches the injectors. The system is fitted in line as either a replacement to the OEM system or an addition. In many marine applications, the original primary filtration system becomes an emergency bypass system
The benefits of Micfil Ultra Fine Filters for fuel are summarised below:
- Cleaner fuel – Less emissions & better economy. We typically achieve 3-6% fuel economy through filtration.
- Cleaner fuel – Reduced above piston engine wear (extended life of injectors). We typically see 2 to 3 fold increase in the life of injectors.
- Cleaner fuel – Less contamination of engine oil as less particulates and therefore less ring wear
- Cleaner Fuel – Lower fuel and maintenance costs.
Though the use of Micfil Filters on the fuel system, a cleaner more efficient combustion is obtained. In turn, this will lead to reduced NOx and Particulates. With better combustion there is better fuel economy resulting in lower CO2.
Benefits of Ultra Fine Filtration – Oil.
Ultra fine filtration at 0.5μm is greater than 10x improvement in the quality of filtration for lubricating oil. As with fuel, most cellulose fuel filters are rated at 5-10μm on installation but this quickly declines through the life of the filter. The ingress of condensation is the key cause and the element swells and blocks causing the fuel to force its way by opening wider passages. Micfil Filter elements will absorb water up to one third of the volume of the insert without any loss of performance. The Micfil lubricating oil system is a bypass/kidney loop filtration system where a feed is taken off the original oil filter housing or an oil gallery, filtered and returned to sump. Flow is restricted via a 2mm baffle plate in the filter housing.
The benefits of Micfil Ultra Fine Filters for lubricating oil are summarised below:
- Cleaner oil – Less wear to engine components
- Cleaner oil – Fewer engine oil changes – less waste. 10,000+ hours without an oil change is not unachievable in engines where complete oil changes are undertaken
- Cleaner oil – Lower maintenance costs.
Engine Gap Tolerances.
In most engines the tolerances between moving surfaces such as bearings and injectors etc. is typically 1-5 μm. Therefore, most OEM filters will not filter out the damaging wear inducing particles causing a continuous wear process on the engine. Micfil Filters will remove those particles extending the life of the engine. It is important to note that Micfil Filters do not remove any additives in the fuel or lubricating oil.
Filter Insert Replacement.
Both the fuel and oil filter systems have gauges or electronic monitoring available. On the fuel system this is a vacuum -1 to 0 Bar gauge and on the oil system it is a pressure 10 to 0 Bar gauge. As the filter blocks over time the gauge rises and at bout 60% on the gauge the filter needs to be changed. On larger engines (it is a linear scale), recommended insert changes are 1,500hrs for fuel & 1,000hrs for oil. However, as the operator gets to know the system and rely on the gauge, longer periods between changes can be undertaken. Note: If the gauge rises to 60+% and then suddenly falls back. The inbuilt filter insert bypass has been activated at about 10μm and the insert should be immediately replaced
